AT&T Mobility provides GSM facilities in a number of states in US. The states of California, New York City and many others had GSM-1900 network that was shared between Cingular Wireless and T-Mobile USA. This was before the incident of takeover of AT&T Wireless. The GSM-1900 network was shared as well as maintained by the two companies through an agreement and the joint venture between them was referred as GSM facilities. As a consensus of the network sharing process, Cingular Wireless offered its service in northern part of New Jersey and in parts of New York City, While T-Mobile provided service to the states of Nevada and and in parts of California. After the acquisition of AT&T Wireless the network of Cingular Wireless was taken over by T-Mobile. Cingular Wireless then started using the networks of AT&T Wireless.
AT&T Mobility has evolved through a number of phases and probably that is why the company uses varied types of wireless communication standards. The most commonly used standard is known as Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM). In addition to the GSM network AT&T Mobility also operates General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) that is a data network service. It also operates Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE). One of the most popular services offered by AT&T Mobility is Push to Talk (PTT). It is done by taking the help of network technology from another entity, Kodiak Networks.
