During the time of its inception Vimpelcom was involved in the operation of the Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) network and Digital AMPS network mainly in the region of Moscow.
In the year 1996 Vimpelcom became much popular all over the world as it was enlisted on the New York Stock Exchange. It was in the year 1997 that the company decided that it would expand its network of Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) across various regions of Russia. During 2001, Vimpelcom finally started its much ambitious project of starting the GSM networks in the country. It was during this time that the telecommunication giant had made its significant presence across a wide area in the nation. In order to expand its business the company decided that it would venture into other neighboring countries. In this context Vimpelcom took over the Kazakhstan based mobile service provider KaR-Tel. After the process of acquisition Vimpelcom got hold of the brands, like Excess and K-Mobile.
The process of acquiring foreign based telecommunication firms continued as Vimpelcom went on to acquire Ukrainian RadioSystems in the year 2005. The Ukrainian based mobile operator used to provide GSM service in Ukraine through the brands like Wellcom as well as Modi. Although Vimpelcom has been facing stiff competitions from the rivals like MegaFon as well as Mobile TeleSystems but the company with its effective service is still catering to numerous customers in Russia and other countries
